What is not covered under Loss of Personal Belongings Cover?

  • Any incident that arises from the insured’s negligence
  • If the car was borrowed from someone else
  • Loss of data stored in electric equipment
  • Any loss caused by the negligence of the policyholder
  • If the items are not generally carried around by the insured
  • Theft of any documents
  • If the incident is not reported to the police within 24 hours of discovery
  • If the items belonged to someone other than the insured
  • If the stolen items are not mentioned in the police report
  • Not taking the right steps with respect to documentation and FIR
  • If the belongings were left overnight in the car.

Claim Process of Loss of Personal Belongings:

1. File an FIR with the police: As soon as you get to know of the theft, you should file an FIR with the local police. In no case should you delay the filing of FIR by more than 24 hours, as your car insurance add-on claim may be rejected otherwise.

2. Inform your insurer: After you have filed the report, give a ring to your insurance provider and inform them of the theft as well. Understand from them what their process for car insurance claims is. It is best not to delay this process as it can impact claim verification.

  • While intimating the insurer, provide the following details:
  • Name of the policyholder
  • Contact details of the policyholder
  • Car insurance policy number
  • Approximate time and correct date when the robbery took place or when you noticed it

3. Inform the RTO: As per the law, you must inform the Regional Transport Office if your car is stolen.

4. Gather all the requisite documents: After this, get all the documents that you will have to submit with the claim form. This includes:

  1. Claim form – duly filled and signed
  2. Copy of the FIR report
  3. Copy of the police investigation report
  4. Invoices and receipts of items you are filing the claim for
  5. Property irregularity report

In the event of a loss the Company shall indemnify the Insured for the Replacement Value of the Personal Belongings as new at the time of damage less due allowance for betterment, wear and tear and or depreciation or the value which can be realized from the market for such insured item immediately before occurrence of damage whichever is lower.
